HANNAH IMPRESSES AT ENGINEERING PLANT
WALTON Girls’ High School pupil Hannah Ashbridge, 15, has taken her first steps into the predominantly male world of engineering.
While her friends chose work experience placements in primary schools and nurseries, she spent two weeks at BGB Innovation, Dysart Road.
Hannah said: “My dad is an engineer and he’s always talking about it, so I thought it would be interesting to see for myself what it’s like.
“My mum and dad were really shocked and my friends didn’t expect me to do something like this.”
BGB Innovation design and build components for wind turbines and Hannah has worked in all areas of the plant, including the design office where she spent the day designing the components in 3D.
But her oily hands and dirty overalls prove her time at the plant included some hard graft. She said: “Being on the machines has been really good and I’ve been learning all about them. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here and getting up
and going to work every morning has been great.”
Quality and environmental
manager Bill Hemingway said: “The team leaders said she’s so focused and so switched on. “She’s picking up things so quickly and she really wants to learn.”
Lincolnshire and Rutland Education Business Partnership employer engagement officer Jacqui Thompson said: “More and more female students are looking to study and gain hands-on work experience within both engineering and construction and employers are certainly looking very favourably at female workers.”
